The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam after a community member recently received a call from someone impersonating a law enforcement officer.
According to deputies, the victim received a call from a “No Caller ID” number. After declining the first call, the caller tried again. When the call was answered, the person claimed to be from the sheriff’s office and told the victim they had two outstanding warrants for missing jury duty.
Authorities say the caller sounded convincing, providing a name and what were described as case numbers. The caller also warned the victim they would be arrested if they came to the sheriff’s office.
The scammer then demanded $2,000 to “pause” the warrant.
The person who received the call ended the conversation and contacted law enforcement, who confirmed the call was a scam.
The sheriff’s office reminds residents that it will never call and demand money to clear a warrant, and law enforcement agencies do not accept payments over the phone to avoid arrest.
Officials say scammers often try to create a sense of fear and urgency to pressure victims into paying quickly.
Anyone who receives a similar call is advised to hang up immediately and avoid providing any personal information or payment.
