More than 3,500 Northern Indiana Public Service Company customers were overbilled for natural gas due to an issue with a new metering system, according to state regulatory filings.
The company began installing Advanced Metering Infrastructure in March 2024, allowing for remote meter readings. However, filings indicate the system incorrectly charged some customers for double their actual gas usage.
NIPSCO identified the issue in October 2024 but did not report it to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission until November 2025.
The company said fewer than one percent of its natural gas customers were affected.
NIPSCO is now offering billing adjustments over a 12-month period and has begun notifying impacted customers through letters and email.
Customers are encouraged to review any communication tied to their NIPSCO accounts for additional details.

NIPSCO sits on this for a year. What a bunch of A-wholes. They need to be lead by someone who is honest and faithful to their customer base. The leadership now seems to be hiding behind a smokescreen. Ferrett out the evil doers, and punish them in front of the front of the Court House! I smell Lawyer all over this. Include the Lawyers in the punishment.
The only way to remove corruption is to shine a very bright light on it.
This is the inevitable result of government granted “natural monopolies”.
Corruption is everywhere. The People are always the losers.
