The City of Elkhart is continuing a federally mandated project to separate its stormwater and sanitary sewer systems, with construction set to impact traffic along Jackson Boulevard through the end of 2026.
City officials say the project is designed to prevent sewage from overflowing into local rivers during heavy rain, improving water quality and keeping waterways safe for recreation.
The work will take place in three phases:
Phase 1 runs from early March through June along Jackson Boulevard between Waterfall Drive and Main Street. The Jackson Boulevard bridge and Waterfall Drive are expected to remain open during most of this phase.
Phase 2 is scheduled from June through September, covering Jackson Boulevard from Main Street to 3rd Street.
Phase 3 will follow from September through December, shifting work to 3rd Street between Jackson Boulevard and High Street.
While access to the Jackson Street bridge and Waterfall Drive will generally remain open, officials warn of periodic closures. Drivers should also plan for a temporary shutdown of both the Jackson Street bridge and Waterfall Drive from Tuesday through Friday of next week.
Residents are encouraged to plan alternate routes and expect delays during construction.
