Lightning is being blamed for a garage fire in Clay Township.

Clay Fire Territory crews were called to a home in the 50800 block of Galaxy Drive in Granger.

When firefighters arrived, they determined lightning had struck a tree near the road. That energy traveled underground, damaging the driveway before entering the garage and knocking out the home’s electrical system.

Crews found smoke inside the home and quickly shut off power while checking for any fire spread into the attic. No additional damage was found.

Fire officials say the homeowner called 911 immediately, helping crews respond quickly and limit the damage.

Fire Marshal Ron Melser is reminding residents to always call 911 first in an emergency and never restore power after a fire or lightning strike until a professional has inspected the system.
