The city of Benton Harbor is pursuing a $21.6 million federal grant to revitalize the Riverview Drive corridor.

The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission helped develop the application for a BUILD Grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Plans focus on improving public access to the riverfront, adding safer pedestrian connections to downtown and nearby neighborhoods, and reducing flooding during high water events.

Officials say the project would use green infrastructure like rain gardens and natural stormwater systems.

WSJM says the goal is to transform the area into a safer, more attractive destination for residents and visitors. A decision is expected by late this year or early next.
