A group called “We Make Indiana” packed a church in South Bend Sunday, calling out unsafe living conditions and pushing for change.
People shared what they’re dealing with at Karl King Towers, Beacon Heights Apartments, and Cedar Glen Apartments: no heat, no hot water, broken elevators, and mold in their apartments. Some said they’ve gone months without basic things like heat.
Others talked about black mold and buildings that aren’t being fixed while rent is still being collected.
The meeting happened at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where neighbors from different backgrounds came together to speak up and be heard.

We literally just had a low-rent apartment get forced into massive upgrades by the City, and once the work was done the $400/month units were worth $1000/month on the open market. Predictably, a bunch of people got evicted and were completely shocked that they couldn’t stay there for $400/month.
These people are headed toward the same surprise. NOTHING is free, folks.
