Mishawaka Utilities is alerting residents to a scam involving fraudulent calls about electric bills.
City officials say scammers are posing as representatives of Indiana Michigan Power and threatening immediate service shutoffs unless payment is made over the phone.
Officials emphasize that neither Mishawaka Utilities nor Indiana Michigan Power demands immediate payment or requests payment through gift cards or mobile apps.
Residents are advised to hang up if they receive suspicious calls and never provide financial information over the phone.
