A fight during the Dowagiac Union High School graduation ceremony led to multiple arrests and several juveniles being taken into custody Sunday afternoon.

Dowagiac Police say officers were called to Chris Taylor Field around 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, after reports of a large fight near the bleachers during the ceremony. When officers arrived, they found a crowd of people fighting, with several people running from the scene.

Police say one person involved in the altercation was taken into custody on an active warrant and was also arrested in connection to the fight. Additional law enforcement agencies from around Cass County were called in to assist because of the number of people involved.

Investigators say a 7-year-old child suffered minor injuries after getting caught in the disturbance. An ambulance responded, but the child’s parents declined medical treatment.

Police later responded to a related altercation on Second Avenue in Dowagiac, where officers located more people believed to be involved in the original fight.

Two adult men, ages 20 and 21, both from Dowagiac, were arrested on charges including assault and battery and disturbing the peace. The 20-year-old was also arrested on an active warrant. Their names have not yet been released pending arraignment in Cass County District Court.

Three juveniles, ages 15, 16, and 17, were also taken into custody and released to their parents. Police say they will be referred to juvenile court.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information or video of the incident is asked to contact Dowagiac Police or the Cass County Tip Line.
