The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office took part in a large multi-state traffic safety initiative along US 20 last Wednesday.

Law enforcement agencies from 12 states joined the coordinated enforcement effort aimed at reducing crashes and improving driver safety along the highway corridor.

Participating states included Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office said it participated because of the high number of crashes reported along US 20 locally.

Deputies focused enforcement efforts during peak travel periods in the mid-morning and mid-afternoon hours. Their work resulted in 22 citations and 33 warnings.

Across all participating agencies, officers issued a combined 415 citations and 211 warnings.

Administrative Captain Derek Allen said traffic safety along US 20 remains a major concern, especially through construction zones, and deputies will continue patrol efforts in the area.
