Police: Alcohol may be factor in crash on U.S. 12 in Cass County

Alcohol may have been a factor in a two-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning in Cass County that sent one person to the hospital.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says deputies assisted the Ontwa Township-Edwardsburg Police Department at the scene around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, at the intersection of U.S. 12 and Eagle Lake Road in Ontwa Township.

Investigators say 50-year-old Cynthia Basil of Granger was traveling south on Eagle Lake Road when she entered the intersection and attempted to cross U.S. 12 without yielding to a westbound vehicle driven by 38-year-old Cassondra Gabriel of Niles.

Authorities say Gabriel was unable to avoid striking the side of Basil’s vehicle.

Gabriel was transported by Edwardsburg Ambulance Service to St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment of possible injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
