South Bend police and firefighters recovered the body of a man from the St. Joseph River on Wednesday evening.

Emergency crews were called to the 700 block of Riverside Drive, south of Leeper Park, around 5:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a body in the water.

The South Bend Fire Department deployed a rescue boat, but shallow water conditions prevented crews from reaching the body by boat. Firefighters were eventually able to recover the body and bring it to shore.

Authorities identified the victim as an adult male, though his age has not been released. The incident remains under investigation.
