The U.S. House has approved legislation designed to strengthen oversight of federally funded child care programs and reduce fraud.
Michigan Congressman and House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg praised passage of the Stop Child Care Scams Act, saying the measure will help ensure taxpayer dollars are used to support families rather than fraudulent operators.
The legislation includes a series of reforms requiring states to improve fraud reporting, conduct additional audits, coordinate investigations and increase accountability for improper payments.
Supporters say the bill will help protect public funds while ensuring child care assistance reaches eligible families.
