An Elkhart man was arrested after authorities say he crashed into a horse-drawn buggy near Middlebury and then left the scene.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, at State Road 13 and County Road 24, about one mile south of Middlebury.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, 66-year-old Edward Herr of Elkhart was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado north on State Road 13 when he struck the rear of a horse-drawn buggy that was traveling in the same direction. Investigators said Herr had been following too closely before the collision.

The impact caused the buggy to overturn. The driver of the buggy, 42-year-old Vernon Hochstetler of Middlebury, suffered head, arm and knee injuries and was transported by ambulance to Elkhart General Hospital.

Authorities say Herr left the scene without providing identifying information or remaining to speak with investigators.

Deputies later located Herr and suspected he was impaired. He was taken to the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges of Operating While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of a Collision Resulting in Bodily Injury.

The crash remains under investigation.
