A Los Angeles man has been sentenced in U.S. District Court in South Bend for his role in a nationwide drug trafficking operation that used the Dark Web.
Bao Xu, 33, was sentenced June 10 to 121 months in prison, followed by four years of supervised release. He previously pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine and distributing five grams or more of methamphetamine.
Federal prosecutors say Xu operated from his Los Angeles apartment, where he marketed drugs on the Dark Web, accepted virtual currency and arranged shipments through the mail. Investigators say the operation reached every state, including Indiana, and averaged more than 260 drug deals and $55,000 in sales each month.
Authorities also seized more than $2 million in virtual currency connected to the case.
U.S. Attorney Adam Mildred said the sentence shows drug traffickers cannot hide on the Dark Web.
The case was investigated by the DEA, FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with help from several local and state agencies, including police in St. Joseph County and Mishawaka.
Xu’s co-defendant, Jianhua Zhao, is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 3.
