A South Bend woman has been charged after a weekend crash that claimed the life of her passenger.

The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27, near McKinley and Manchester roads in South Bend. Police say the car struck the rear of a parked, unoccupied tow truck in a nearby parking lot.

Investigators say the driver, 26-year-old Dadranae Taylor, was not seriously injured. Her passenger, 24-year-old Naomie Gregory, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigators, Taylor admitted at the scene that she had been drinking earlier that night. The St. Joseph County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT) took over the investigation.

While being evaluated at a hospital, Taylor allegedly told investigators she had consumed a couple of alcoholic drinks and smoked marijuana before driving. She also reportedly said she decided to drive because Gregory was too intoxicated to do so, but could not remember how the crash happened.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Taylor with Causing Death While Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, a Level 4 felony, and Reckless Homicide, a Level 5 felony.

Taylor is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail.
