A Middlebury man was cited after a crash involving a horse-drawn buggy Thursday afternoon in Elkhart County that left the buggy driver with serious injuries.

The crash happened around 2:10 p.m. on State Road 13, north of County Road 34.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, a 45-year-old Middlebury man was driving a 2018 Ram 3500 southbound when he came upon a southbound horse-drawn buggy. Investigators said the driver was unable to stop in time and attempted to avoid the buggy, but an oncoming vehicle prevented him from moving into the northbound lane.

The pickup struck the rear of the buggy.

The buggy driver, a 27-year-old man, suffered severe head trauma and was airlifted to Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The pickup driver was not injured and was cited for improper passing.

The crash remains under investigation.
