The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is clearing up a common misconception about the state’s popular Blackout license plate.
The BMV says the special black-and-white plates are no easier for automated license plate reader cameras to scan than any other Indiana plate.
Indiana State Police say the plate’s color and design have no effect on how well the technology works.
More than 240,000 Hoosier vehicles now display a version of the Blackout plate, which has been available for about a year.

The biggest advantage to the blackout plate is entirely aesthetic: they aren’t ugly like most of our Indiana plates have historically been (stupid farmland silhouette plate, we’re looking at you).
