Indiana Governor Mike Braun says the state is making up to $5,000 in emergency aid grants available to help displaced families cover basic needs for shelter, food, and clothing. Hoosiers can apply by calling 211.
The state has deployed damage assessment teams and expects to submit a request for a federal major disaster declaration within 24 to 48 hours to secure potential FEMA assistance. Braun says the state has sufficient emergency reserves to cover recovery costs without raising gas taxes.
“We have the resources to meet this challenge,” Braun said in a Monday news conference. “Our emergency reserves are healthy, and we are going to make sure that funding gets to the Hoosiers who need it most without asking taxpayers to pay more at the pump.”
Department of Homeland Security Executive Director Jonathan Whitham says the current federal emergency declaration does not cover property damage.
“As of right now, there is no FEMA assistance for individual homeowners,” Whitham said. “That emergency declaration is for response costs related to state and local response.”
Whitham adds that FEMA teams are in Indiana assisting state and local inspectors as they assess damager to prepare the state’s major disaster declaration request.
“We are preparing the data right now to submit the next request,” Whitham said. “That’s what we are anticipating will be submitted here.”
Indiana is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to inspect critical infrastructure and monitor high water levels along regional waterwats.
