Gov. Mike Braun has unveiled commemorative Freedom 250 highway signs that will be installed along Interstate 70 and U.S. 30 in Indiana as part of the nationwide celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will install 20 signs over the next week. The signs recognize both the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary and two milestones in American transportation history: the 70th anniversary of the Eisenhower Interstate System and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Highway, now part of U.S. 30.

Braun unveiled the signs during a ceremony at the I-70 eastbound rest area near Plainfield. He was joined by Indiana Department of Transportation officials.

“For generations, Indiana’s highways have served as a central hub connecting Americans to family, communities, businesses and opportunities across our nation,” Braun said. “As we celebrate 250 years of American freedom, these signs are a fitting tribute to Indiana’s proud legacy as the Crossroads of America.”

Secretary of Transportation and Infrastructure Matt Ubelhor said the highways are important transportation routes for both Hoosiers and visitors.

“I-70 and U.S. 30 are main thoroughfares traveled by thousands of Indiana residents and visitors each day,” Ubelhor said. “Both are significant in the history of transportation.”

The signs are part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s “Freedom Moves You” campaign, a component of the White House Freedom 250 initiative. Similar signs and flags are being displayed along highways in other states.

The Indiana signs will remain in place through the end of 2027.
