A family dog is credited with alerting an Elkhart homeowner to a garage fire Monday afternoon.

The Elkhart Fire Department was called to the 1700 block of Crabtree Lane shortly after 4 p.m. Firefighters arriving at the home found smoke coming from the garage.

The homeowner told firefighters the family’s dog began barking repeatedly, prompting her to investigate and discover the fire. Everyone inside the home, including the family’s animals, was able to get out safely.

Firefighters entered the garage and brought the fire under control by about 4:35 p.m.

Smoke alarms were installed inside the home, but investigators said there was no smoke alarm in the garage.

No residents or firefighters were injured.

The family was displaced because of smoke damage and the home’s utilities being shut off. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
