No Indiana retailers have been fined since the state began restricting SNAP benefits from being used to buy candy or soft drinks.
A spokesperson for the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service says the agency has taken action 61 times this year against Indiana retailers for criminal or administrative violations.
None of those cases involved Indiana’s restrictions on using SNAP benefits to buy soda or other junk food.
Governor Mike Braun issued an executive order last year directing the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration to seek a federal waiver allowing the state to limit SNAP purchases of candy and soft drinks.
