Federal immigration officers working in Lawrence were assisted Wednesday by Lawrence Police after a man with felony warrants barricaded himself inside a business.

Lawrence Deputy Chief Travis Kline says ICE agents were conducting an operation when the man ran from them and barricaded himself inside the business.

“He barricaded himself inside one of our Lawrence businesses,” Kline said. “Once in that business, ICE asked for our assistance, and we went over there and assisted them.”

“He had felony warrants out of Texas, full extradition,” he said. “He ran from the ICE agents, ran into that business and barricaded himself inside.”

Kline says ICE contacted Lawrence Police for help, and officers responded because of the potential danger to people inside the business.

“Once barricaded, they called us to come over and help them, which we would 100% do every day of the week,” Kline said.

Police used a canine to help take the man into custody.

“They are a law enforcement agency,” Kline said. “They’re trying to do their job, and someone with a felony warrant just barricaded themselves in one of our businesses.”

Kline says the priority was keeping everyone inside safe.

“For public safety, for the safety of everybody in the business, we are going to assist them in taking him into custody,” he said.
