A Marshall County prosecutor says no criminal charges will be filed against a woman accused of making a false child welfare report involving former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

The report prompted police and child welfare investigators to go to Buttigieg’s home in Traverse City, Michigan, in June. Buttigieg was temporarily restricted from being alone with his two children while investigators conducted forensic interviews.

Investigators traced the report to Marshall County, Indiana.

Prosecutor Nelson Chipman says he could not determine the woman had the mental capacity to form the intent necessary for a criminal conviction. He cited a history of alcohol abuse and serious mental health issues.

The woman, who is from Alabama, had been staying with relatives in Marshall County. She has since returned to Alabama and is reportedly living in a halfway house.

Meanwhile, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has launched a separate investigation into the incident and how the original complaint was handled.
