Elkhart Police are warning local businesses about phone scams involving callers posing as police officers or other law enforcement officials.
In one scam, callers claim an employee missed jury duty and must pay a fine with gift cards. In another, callers say a co-worker is under investigation and tell employees to take cash from the business and convert it into gift cards.
Police stress that law enforcement and courts will not demand payment by phone, text or gift card. They also will not instruct workers to remove money from a cash register as part of an investigation.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up and independently contact Elkhart Police at 574-295-7070.
