The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting Sunday night at the Woodland Crossing Apartment Complex.
Deputies were called after multiple reports of gunfire. Investigators say the incident appeared to involve a drive-by shooting and two vehicles.
A vehicle involved in the incident later crashed near County Road 400 North and Woodland Avenue. Deputies found two people near the vehicle, including a 24-year-old man with an upper-body gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital.
A 23-year-old man later arrived at another hospital with an upper-body gunshot wound and was transferred to a regional hospital for advanced treatment.
Investigators identified 28-year-old Cevin J. Crawford as the driver of the crashed vehicle. He was arrested after deputies say he was uncooperative at the crash scene.
Crawford is being held in the La Porte County Jail without bond on allegations including intimidation, operating while intoxicated, resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
Deputies also arrested Crawford’s mother, 51-year-old Tina M. Sherrod, after they say she refused repeated orders to leave the active investigation scene. She was charged with refusal to leave an emergency incident area and later released after posting bond.
Authorities recovered evidence from multiple scenes and seized two vehicles. The investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with cellphone video or surveillance footage is asked to contact La Porte County Sheriff’s Detective Captain Andy Hynek at 219-326-7700, extension 2401.
