More than 380,000 Indiana Blackout license plates have been sold since the specialty plate debuted in August 2025, generating about $12.9 million for Bureau of Motor Vehicles upgrades and employee investments, Gov. Mike Braun announced.
The optional plate costs an additional $45 at registration and annual renewal. It is available for passenger vehicles, light trucks, motorcycles and RVs. Drivers can personalize the plate for another $45.
State officials say the revenue is being used as part of the BMV’s five-year modernization plan. The agency has added payment machines that accept digital wallets and tap-to-pay options, expanded its network of 24-hour BMV Connect kiosks and announced raises for many customer-facing employees.
Nearly 22,000 Blackout plates were purchased in the first month of sales, and more than 90,000 had been sold by the end of 2025. The first customers are now beginning to renew their registrations, creating an ongoing revenue source for BMV improvements.
