Berrien County’s new animal shelter is now open and taking care of animals that are waiting to be adopted.

The $4 million shelter opened about three years ago and is currently housing 100 cats and 70 dogs, WNDU reported.

“We’re able to keep (animals) longer, hold them longer if they’re adoptable and we can keep the quarantined animals to themselves, the strays to themselves, to give the owners a chance to come in and get them,” Val Grimes, Berrien County Animal Control director, told WNDU.

A public open house at the facility off Napier Avenue near I-94 is scheduled to be from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 22.
