Child killed in off-road vehicle collision in Syracuse identified

An 11-year-old child was killed in an off-road vehicle collision.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 25, in Syracuse, in the area of County Road 35 south of US 6, according to conversation officers with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The victim, Kyle Hilty, was last seen operating an ATV around his family property around 6 p.m. After about 20 minutes Hilty’s brother found him lying in a field, the DNR stated.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Kyle struck a piece of farm equipment hidden by tall grass in a field. He was thrown from the ATV upon impact, the DNR stated.

Kyle was not wearing a helmet or any other safety equipment, the DNR stated.

Indiana Conservation Officers, along with crews from Benton Township Fire/EMS, Turkey Creek-Syracuse Fire/EMS, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Syracuse Police tried to revive Kyle.

The investigation is ongoing by Indiana Conservation Officers with help from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department and Syracuse Police.
