BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana University is adding lights to a wooded area on the Bloomington campus to help alleviate student safety concerns.

The work in Dunn’s Woods involved installing more than 40 new lantern-style lighting fixtures.

IU Vice President Tom Morrison tells The (Bloomington) Herald-Times that many students raised safety worries about walking after dark in the 10-acre wooded area that’s surrounded by several of the oldest campus buildings.

The project comes after a 19-year-old student reported being assaulted by two men while walking through Dunn’s Woods last November. She said one of the men possibly put a knife to her throat before she escaped.

The LED lights should all be in operation within the next few weeks.
