The Notre Dame cornerback accused of tackling and punching a police officer has had his first appearance in court.

Devin Butler will be back in court once again for a status hearing on October 17. He pleaded not guilty last week to charges of resisting law enforcement and battery against a public safety official.

Butler was arrested just hours after Indiana State Police arrested five teammates about 40 miles south of South Bend on misdemeanor marijuana and gun charges in a separate incident.

Butler shoved a woman outside the Linebacker Inn bar. A South Bend police officer grabbed Butler and pushed him away, but Butler began cursing at the officers, according to court documents.

Butler pushed one of them off balance, picked him up over a curb and tackled the officer to the ground, then struck him repeatedly. The officer suffered injuries to his elbow, wrist, back, neck and arm, according to court documents.
