Man dies from injuries from LaPorte motorcycle crash

A minivan drove through a stop sign and a man is dead as a result.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office were called to the intersection of U.S. 6 and U.S. 421 just south of Westville at around 5:10 p.m. Saturday, according to a press release.

A mini van being driven by Karina Hernandez, 35, of Merrillville blew the stop sign as she drove westbound on U.S. 6, according to the news release.

A motorcycle being ridden by Joseph Filippini, 62, ran into the driver’s side of the van. He was ejected from the motorcycle.

Filippini was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but later died due to blunt force trauma, according to Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris.

Two of the children in the minivan, ages nine and 11, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Hernandez and another child weren’t hurt, but Hernandez as ticketed for disregarding a stop sign, the news release stated.
