Newly-opened South Bend Mexican restaurant closing for food illness reports

It’s not the grand opening that Fiesta Cancun Mexican Restaurant & Cantina wanted.

Less than a month after opening, it’s now forced to close for now after the St. Joseph County Health Department got multiple reports of food-related illness from customers, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Customers reported to the health department that they became ill after eating at Fiesta Cancun on Oct. 15, 19, and 21.

One person reportedly got sick after eating a Steak Mexicano on Oct. 15. An inspection afterwards found eight violations of the health code, five of them critical.

Another customer on Oct. 19 got sick after eating a stuffed pepper. Health inspectors found 10 health code violations two days later.

On the same day as that last health inspection, seven out of a group of 11 adults fell ill. A third visit from the St. Joseph County Health Department this week found the white cheese sauce was kept at too warm of a temperature in the walk-in cooler.

A hearing with Fiesta Cancun will take place on Monday.
