Etna Green church fire deliberately started by burning Bible

A Garrett man is behind bars after confessing that he tried to burn down a Kosciusko County church with, of all things, a Bible.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Harrison Center Church in Etna Green at around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13.

Officers met with two individuals who had been driving past the church and noticed a small fire on the outside of the building. The fire was quickly put out, but a Bible found near the siding was determined to have been lit on fire to provide a burning source.

Detectives found information inside the partially burned Bible that led them to Danny Bruce Kirby, Jr., who reportedly confessed that he had set the Bible on fire with the intent to burn down the church.

He’s being held in the Dekalb County Jail with no bond.
