Proposed high-rise in South Bend rejected by common council

It was a tough decision, but one the South Bend Common Council felt had to be made.

By a narrow 5-4 margin, the council voted against zoning amendments for a 12-story mixed-use building in the East Bank, according to ABC 57.

A plan for the East Bank area put in place in 2008 did not include such a huge development. The council suggested to the developer, Dave Matthews LLC, to build out instead of up. Instead, it appears the developer is unsure about continuing with the project at all, according to ABC 57.

The building would have contained housing and retail space, including a Martin’s grocery store and pharmacy.

The $5 million in Regional Cities funding for the project may have to be allocated elsewhere if the project doesn’t go forward.
