Elkhart landlord registry repealed due to lack of enforcement

(Sam Householder/Elkhart Truth)

A lack of enforcement has led the Elkhart City Council to repeal a city ordinance that required landlords to register their rental properties.

The City Council overturned the ordinance, which was created in 2006, according to the Elkhart Truth.

It required rental properties to be registered annually for a $5 fee and would result in penalties for landlords who failed to do so. Last year there were more than 2,900 rental properties registered with the city.

Council President Brian Dickerson and Councilman David Henke both spoke out against the ordinance, saying it was being enforced unfairly and did nothing to help code enforcement or the conditions of rental properties.

The repeal will go into effect in July.
