Berrien County Lieutenant fired after stealing groceries from Walmart

An officer in the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department found himself on the wrong side of the law last month.

Trent Babcock was fired Monday from his post as Lieutenant after pleading guilty to retail fraud on Friday, March 3, according to ABC 57.

2013’s “Deputy of the Year” was caught on security camera filling a shopping cart with bags of groceries worth around $180, then trying to leave by going through a closed check-out lane, according to the Niles Daily Star.

The next day, he was confronted by a store employee, where he admitted to stealing the groceries.

He was later ordered to pay over $400 in fines and costs.
