Car ends up in St. Joseph River in Elkhart

A car has ended up in the St. Joseph River in Elkhart, and police and fire crews are at the scene.

It happened at McNaughton Park in Elkhart. Divers could be seen entering and exiting the water. A boat also has been crisscrossing the river since about 9:30 a.m., according to the Elkhart Truth.

Indiana Conservation Officers are on hand, sending additional boats and divers. A large area at the park has been taped off.

A 47-year-old man was found in the driver’s seat inside the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at Elkhart General Hospital. Foul play is not suspected in his death, according to police.
