Elkhart Central High School student shot at while walking home from school

A 15-year-old Elkhart Central High School student was shot at while walking home from school.

It happened just before 3:00 on Tuesday in the 400 block of Waterfall Drive, according to Elkahrt Police.

The teen was not hit by the gunfire. He told police he heard someone yell his name, investigators stated.

When he looked to see who was there, gunshots rang out.

It’s not believed the suspect or the gun used in the incident were ever on school property, investigators stated.

The case remains under investigation.

The following news release about the incident was issued by Elkhart Police on Wednesday:

On Tuesday April 18, 2017 at 2:56 PM officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Waterfall Drive in regards to sounds of gunfire.

Officers arrived in the area and found the subjects who were involved had left the area. There were no reported injuries and no property was reported damaged by the gunfire.

During the investigation officers located 5 casing which were collected as evidence.

Later officers made contact with the victim, 15 year old male, which was not injured as a result of the gunfire.

The victim reported he was walking home from Elkhart Central High School.

While in the area of Blazer Boulevard and Richmond Street he heard somebody yell his name. When he looked to see who yelled his name he observed two acquaintances, neither attend Elkhart Central High School.

At that time one of the acquaintances fired a handgun at the victim; none of the bullets struck the victim.

Officers of the Elkhart Police Department have been in contact with administrators from the Elkhart Community Schools to make sure actions were taken to ensure the safety of students.

At this time we do not have any reason to believe the suspect or the gun used in the incident were on school property.

The case remains under investigation.
