The St. Joseph County Council approved a new animal ordinance on Tuesday, and some changes are on the way.

A committee of local advocates and council members has spent close to a year working on changes to the ordinance, which hasn’t changed in a decade, according to ABC 57.

New changes in the community, such as lost and found Facebook posts, have demonstrated the need for updated policies. Among the changes are a requirement that all found animals are to be reported to the humane society, and a lifting of the “four animals per household” limit.

The relationship between the size of property and the number of livestock and chickens owned would also change.

If approved, the changes would go into effect this summer. The revisions now go before a committee before another council vote in June.
