A man was injured in an apparent drive-by shooting in Elkhart County and the suspect shooter was later hospitalized after a crash during a police pursuit.

The shooting happened Saturday, May 13, around 4:30 p.m., according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the 52000 block of County Road 7 where they found a 23-year-old man who was shot in the leg.

The victim told police he was driving his vehicle westbound on County Road 4, east of County Road 7 and was followed by a Ford Mustang. The man told police the driver of the Mustang shot at his vehicle several times and one of the rounds struck him in the leg.

The victim said the driver of the Mustang continued northbound on County Road 7, but was soon spotted by an officer with the Bristol Police Department.

The officer tried to stop the Mustang, but the driver continued traveling into Michigan and crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of U.S. 12 and South River Road.

The driver of the Mustang was flown to Memorial Hospital with life threatening injuries. The other motorist involved in the crash was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The shooting victim was also treated for non-life threatening injuries.
