One person killed, another injured in crash on U.S. 12 in Cass County

One person was killed and a second person was rushed to the hospital after a crash on US 12 at Tharp Lake Road in Mason Township.

The collision happened on just before 2:10 p.m. on Friday, June 9, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

A 23-year-old Bristol man driving a truck heading northbound on Tharp Lake Rd failed to stop at the intersection and struck a westbound car on US 12, the sheriff’s office stated.

The Bristol man was ejected from the truck which caught fire and was transported by MedFlight to Memorial Hospital in South Bend where he remains in critical condition.

The driver of the car, David Michael Steven, 22, of Cassopolis, died at the scene, the sheriff’s office stated.

It was not known on late Friday afternoon whether safety belts or alcohol were a factor in the crash, according to the sheriff’s office.
