Martin’s Super Markets hopes that a leaner, more efficient store on the northwest side will be better than its larger predecessor that’s closing later this month.

Store leaders revealed plans to the Near Northwest Neighborhood Association Monday night for the “Martin’s Meat & Market.” The South Bend Tribune reports the new store will be 35,000-square-feet in size, but will still occupy its current 56,000-square-foot location at Portage and Elwood, which has been open in some shape or form since 1947.

Store officials say the new store will have a stronger emphasis on its meat market, hot food options, and lower price points. But its deli and bakery areas are being cut.

The store is closing on Sept. 29, but will reopen on Oct. 5 with the new concept.
