Local political leaders mostly supportive of President Trump’s opioid announcement

Some local leaders are reacting to the president’s opioid announcement.

Thursday, President Trump declared a nationwide public health emergency.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg says he has hopes that this will help, but thinks its too soon to say whether the declaration will mean much. He told WSBT that the city is going to continue to do what it can with the resources at hand.

Senator Joe Donnelly called the president’s declaration “an important step to bring more epidemic to the epidemic.”

Congressman Fred Upton applauded the president for what he called “decisive action.”

Both Donnelly and Upton say they plan to work to pass legislation in Congress to fight the problem.
