State trooper among dozens of crashes in Michiana Wednesday morning

The black ice and sleet situation Wednesday morning caused huge problems for motorists all over Michiana.

That includes an Indiana State Trooper. The trooper was involved in a crash in the westbound lanes of the bypass between State Road 19 and U.S. 33. Westbound lanes were closed for much of the morning due to multiple crashes and slideoffs, and officials were warning people to stay off the bypass in every county along the bypass.

There were 10 accidents in the South Bend jurisdiction of the highway alone, and Elkhart County responded to 14 accidents in just three hours.

The numbers for St. Joseph County are even more alarming, as a dispatcher tells us that 83 crashes happened within just 38 minutes on county roads.
