Charges have been filed against the man who allegedly hit a two-year-old boy in his car and then leaving the scene in South Bend.

35-year-old Robert Bachtel is charged with a single count of Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Serious Bodily Injury. That’s a Level 6 felony that carries a maximum 2 and a half years in prison if convicted.

He allegedly hit the child Tuesday afternoon on Indiana Avenue, then ran from the scene.

The boy suffered serious head injuries.

Court documents say, when asked why he didn’t call police right away, he said he thought the child was dead and thought he would go to prison, and wanted to see his son first.
