SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Two white coaches have filed federal complaints against a northern Indiana school district, alleging officials discriminated against them.

Bill Groves alleges the South Bend Community School Corp. hired Seabe Gavin, who is black, to be the district athletic director based on race rather than merit.

Groves has filed a race discrimination claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, saying Gavin has less experience and lacks a master’s degree. Groves has been the Adams High School athletic director for a decade.

Mark Johnson taught at South Bend Riley High School for 15 years before retiring. He’s suing the district for race discrimination and retaliation for complaining about his claim. He alleges a school board member and guidance counselor harassed him and that school officials failed to address his concerns.

District officials have denied the allegations.
