Five people rescued from Paw Paw River

Five people challenged by high water and fast current were pulled from the Paw Paw River.

It happened just after 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sep. 2.

Emergency crews were called the river in Watervliet Township on the report of two missing tubers.

During a search for the the tubers, rescue personnel came into contact with three unrelated kayakers and tubers, who also needed to be rescued, after they fell out of their kayak and inner tubes.

The people rescued were from Eau Clair, Kalamazoo and Chicago and ranged in age from 14 to 69 years old.

During the rescue mission, a kayak being operated by a North Berrien Fire Department first responder also overturned. The first responder was safely able to get out of the water on his own.
