Man, 85, hanging lights at IU sorority house dies after fall

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Police say an 85-year-old Bloomington man died after he fell from a ladder while hanging Christmas lights at a sorority house on Indiana University’s campus.

IU Police Department Capt. Craig Munroe says Billy Joe Marvin Wiley was working at Pi Beta Phi’s chapter house when he fell Monday. He says Wiley was a private contractor and not a school employee.

Monroe County Coroner Joani Shields says Wiley was on a 20-foot ladder when he lost his footing about 12:45 p.m. Monday and fell to the pavement. She says he died hours later at a Bloomington hospital from blunt-force trauma to the head, neck and chest.

The Herald-Times reports that Wiley was a former barber who was known for his outgoing personality, work ethic and willingness to help others.
