The long-awaited direct link from the U.S. 31 bypass to I-94 in Berrien County is getting funding.
Congressman an Fred Upton announced that MDOT has been given a $20 million grant to complete the U.S. 31 relocation project.
The project has been discussed and planned for almost 40 years.
The last stretch of the road, from Napier Avenue to I-94 just south of I-196, is only two miles, but it has sat unfinished for years since the bypass expanded to Napier.
Upton says the completion of the project will ensure that southwest Michigan remains competitive.
MDOT expects the stretch of road will be finished by the end of 2023.

What a deal $10 million a mile and it my be done by the end of 2023. What are smoking in Michigan. Next time Indiana will wait while you build your part of a two state highway and we’ll finish our half when you finish. While you’re at it why don’t you connect US-31 directly to I-196. It makes zero sense to put that traffic on I-94 and you can improve the interchange.
