A new scientific report suggests that the Great Lakes region is warming up faster than the rest of U.S., and the results suggest that could bring more flooding and other extreme weather to the area, including heat waves and drought.

The report, commissioned by the Chicago-based Environmental Law & Policy Center, says the warming climate could also mean less overall snowfall to the region, even as lake-effect snowstorms intensify.

More severe algae blooms are also expected which would make swimming unsafe and increase the costs of water treatment. There will likely also be increased erosion along beaches, and Great Lakes area farmers will have to contend with both late-planting due to heavy rain delays…and dry spells that require more irrigation in the summer.
